The construction of a 1 megawatt (MW) green hydrogen demonstration plant is underway at Kandla port in Gujarat and it is expected to commence supplies by the end of July 2025.

“We had placed an order with Larsen & Toubro for this green hydrogen plant. Testing of the electrolysers has been completed at L&T’s Hazira plant and will be sent to Kandla for installation. We are targeting commissioning this demonstration plant by the end of July,” said Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), which operates Kandla port.

The green hydrogen demonstration project, coming up at a cost of about ₹13 crore, is expected to fuel the hydrogen-powered buses slated to be operated by DPA in Gandhidham town, about 15 km from Kandla port. “There are two ways in which we can use the green hydrogen produced through this demonstration project. We had signed an agreement with NTPC, wherein 11 hydrogen-powered buses will be brought to Gandhidham as part of the green mobility project. These buses will need hydrogen. As a second option, we plan to install fuel cells, which will produce electricity from this hydrogen to light up the port or jetty areas,” Singh added.

The green hydrogen demonstration project is in addition to other large-scale green hydrogen projects coming up at Kandla port. businessline had earlier reported that DPA has cumulatively allotted 3,400 acres to four corporate houses — Reliance Green Hydrogen and Green Chemicals, Larsen & Toubro Green Energy Tech, Welspun New Energy, and AM Green Hydrogen — to set up units near Kandla port to produce 5.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per annum.

Green hydrogen and its derivatives like methanol and green ammonia will be exported, besides fuelling vessels calling at the port. Kandla, Tuticorin and Paradip are the ports chosen for development as hydrogen hubs.
