'Strengthening India's supply chain management needed'

A logistics seminar here has stressed the need to finetune the supply chain management in the country, given the recent growth in e-commerce.

Suresh Joseph, former CEO, DP World, Kochi, said that the increase in business activities especially through e-retailing has strengthened the need to span the entire chain of supply and demand by leveraging new age practices. The rolling out of GST initiatives in the coming days will also provide a fertile platform for supply chain management.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Supply Chain Management – Opportunities and Challenges’ organised by the Commerce Department of St Alberts College.

The opening up of the country’s economy has necessitated the need to switch over to supply chain management from traditional transportation. The advent of containerisation had also revolutionised logistics sector and propelled end to end logistic efforts, which later emerged as supply chain management, he said.

Among those who attended the function included S.A.S.Nawas, former Deputy Commissioner, Kochi Customs, Prakash Iyer, President, Cochin Steamer Agents Association, also spoke.
