The Tamil Nadu Government is as keen as the Centre in implementing the Colachel port project (Enayam), and will provide all necessary support to the Centre for the project, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said.

She assured this to the Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan.

Jayalalithaa said that from her first tenure as Chief Minister of the State she was keen on implementing the project.

However, lack of support from successive Central governments had meant that the project could not be implemented, she said in a statement after meeting Radhakrishnan at the Secretariat.

Radhakrishnan requested the State Government’s support for taking a survey for the preparation of detailed project report for the development of a major port at Enayam (Colachel).

He indicated that construction of the port is at a place nearly one km away from Enayam, which will not be affected by the construction. The port will be built by reclaiming land from the sea and no existing habitation will be affected, the release said.
