VOC Port’s initiative to beautify Tuticorin

As part of its corporate social responsibility , the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, has come forward to lend financial support for the development of Tuticorin. The augmentation of the already existing facilities are being planned, and also the opening of more avenues for entertainment and leisure.

According to S. Natarajan, Chairman (in-charge) of the Port, the newly created Pearl City Beach would soon have a skating track and a beach volley ball court and the works would be executed at a cost of Rs 11 lakh.

The entire Pearl City Beach would be beautified at a cost of Rs 50 lakh with one-third contribution from the port and the rest from the District Administration under the Self-Sufficiency Scheme.

Contributions would also be made to establish additional facilities in the multi-purpose indoor stadium at the District Sports Stadium in Tuticorin. Further, walker’s track and seating arrangements would be established on both sides from the port boundary to the Railway link road.

Funds would also be released for development projects under the Tuticorin Corporation limits. The projects include black topping of roads in various parts of Tuticorin town at a cost of Rs 113.70 lakh, and development of Sankara Narayana Park at Toovipuram at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.

Dredging work at the mouth of Punnakayal would be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 18 lakh and dredging of the Tuticorin fishing harbour from 2.1 metres to three metres to facilitate the movement of fishing craft in full load would be taken up at a cost of Rs 168 lakh.

The erection of two high mast tower lights in the fishing harbour at a cost of Rs 15.60 lakh and erection of road lights on the Beach Road up to Roche Park at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, would also be undertaken, the sources mentioned.
