Innovative leadership depends on qualities such as willingness to change to the competitive environment, to chalk out innovative strategies and to take best use of intellectual capital, according to Dr M.S. Moodithaya, Director (Global Initiatives), Nitte University.

He was delivering the Business Line Club lecture on ‘Innovative leadership' at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) College at Ujire in Belthangady taluk on Friday. The event was sponsored by Syndicate Bank.

Quoting the examples of Apple Computers and Google, Dr Moodithaya said a leader should have willingness to change in a competitive environment.

Referring to the role of strategy in the leadership development, he said there is no point in imitating the strategy of the market leader. Rather it is essential to think differently in a crowded market and come out with an innovative strategy.

“The competitor will overtake you if you lack the right strategy,” he said.

If the hamburger-maker McDonald can offer a course on its specialties, why Indians can't think of launching courses on Indian delicacies, he said, adding that this will help set standards for Indian delicacies.

Highlighting the role of intellectual capital in innovative leadership development, Dr Moodithaya said that the interactions with thought leaders would help in this regard.

It is also essential to take advantage of the technology for development. An innovative leader should have the intellectual ability, warrior spirit, business acumen and hardworking nature, he said.

Dr Moodithaya concluded the lecture by asking the students to think globally and act locally. He also made an appeal to students to develop Business Line reading as a practice in their day-to-day life.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr B. Yashovarma, Secretary of SDM Education Society and Principal of SDM College, said that individuals should remain updated to be relevant in today's world.

He thanked Business Line for inculcating reading habit among students through Business Line Club activities.

Mr P.N. Udayachandra, Head of the Commerce Department, SDM College, Ujire, welcomed the gathering.
