Photo IDs mandatory for civic polls in Kerala

The Panchayati Raj and Municipal Acts are likely to be amended to make photo identity cards mandatory in the civic polls in Kerala.

A meeting of major political parties convened here by the State Election Commissioner resolved to recommend the same to the State Government.

In this manner, five documents other than the identity card issued by the Chief Election Commissioner could be presented as ID proof in the civic polls.

They include ration card and bank pass book, as allowed by the existing Panchayati Raj and Municipal Acts, an official spokesman said here.

These were, however, found not fool-proof enough to prevent malpractices during the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

This is why photo identity cards are being made mandatory in the civic polls in the State, the spokesman added.
