Special task force to monitor women’s safety

The Home Ministry has decided to constitute a special task force to look into the safety issues of women in Delhi, which has become infamous as the most women-unfriendly metro.

This move comes in the wake of strong protests against sexual crimes in general and all forms of violence against women in the country following the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedic student in Delhi on the night of December 16.

The 13-member task force, to be headed by the Union Home Secretary, would review the performance of the Delhi Police as well as the Delhi Government on a fortnightly basis. The other members of the group would include Delhi’s Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, Delhi Police’s Special Commissioner (Traffic), Special Commissioner (Law & Order), and Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women, among others.

“The Task Force shall continuously review action taken by the Delhi Police and Delhi Government,” an official release said.

The statement added that it will also take into consideration suggestions made by the Members of Parliament during debates on the issue.
