Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that it will come out with recommendations on compensating consumers for call drops, in next two weeks.

Addressing an ‘open house’ discussion on the issue here on Thursday, RS Sharma, Chairman, TRAI, said that the regulator will also release a service paper in the next few days listing reasons behind the call drops.

“We will come out with recommendations on compensation to the consumers for call drops by October 15. The stakeholders can submit their written submission on the issue deliberated today (Thursday) by October 5,” Sharma said.

Representatives of various telecom companies such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and consumer groups participated in the open house discussion.

The move will help customers to determine which player is providing better services in an area and accordingly they can select their operator, Sharma said adding that TRAI will present the ground situation on call drops in data terms.

TRAI will also publish the results of the drive tests conducted by it on September 28-29 in Delhi and Mumbai in a few days, he said. TRAI has also conducted drive tests in five other cities including Ahmadabad and Pune recently, for which it will publish details.

The Authority is also considering making mandatory for telecom operators to disclose their network capacities periodically as call drop problem needs to be examined in entirety.
