The Government is not unduly concerned about the dam being constructed by the Chinese on the Brahmaputra river. “There is no large scale diversion of water by China. We have been monitoring the situation and will continue to do so. There is no real alarm about the dam,” official sources said. Sources indicated that the assessment was based not only on what had been communicated but also through satellite imagery of the site.
China is constructing a dam at Zangmu in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo. The Brahmaputra is called Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. “India had ascertained from its own sources that the dam is a run of the river hydro-electric project which does not store water and will not adversely impact the down stream areas in India,” an official statement issued earlier this week said.
