The Indian Institute of Welding has approached the Government to constitute a regulatory body to ensure only certified welders are employed in the industry.

Speaking to BusinessLine , R Srinivasan, President, IIW, said the institute has approached the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship for Government recognition to certificates being issued to its students.

Simultaneously, the institute has moved the Department of Heavy Industry to bring in regulation that impress on the industry to employ only certified welders.

“We need to have qualified people to support the Government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign and attract investments into the country. Though large corporate houses insist on welding certification, the awareness needs to catch up with suppliers and contractors,” he said.
