Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) on Tuesday inaugurated an Rs 10-crore robot-assisted surgery facility, claimed to be the country's second and South India's first such facility.

The facility will be used to treat patients needing urology and gynaecology-related surgeries. “We will subsequently be adding other specialities such as ENT, cardiac surgery, gastro intestinal surgery and liver resections,” Dr B. Bhaskar Rao, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KIMS, told media persons here.

The facility was set up in association with Vattikuti Urology Institute of US, a global player propagating the concept of minimally invasive research with focus on robotic surgery. VUI has performed over 6,000 robotic surgeries.

“The major advantage of robotics assisted surgery is that the incisions made are tiny so the recovery from surgery is quick. Robots also give surgeons more flexibility and precision to conduct surgeries, apart from three-dimensional magnification,” he said.

Dr James Peabody, a leading consultant in robotic surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit will be conducting various urological surgical procedures such as radical prostectomy, radical cystectomy and partial nephrectomy.

The cost of robot-assisted surgery ranges between $5,000 and $6,000.
