Rs 1,400 cr annul Plan for Sikkim

The Planning Commission today approved Sikkim's annual Plan of Rs 1,400 crore for 2011-12. It was finalised here at a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Pawan Chamling.

Commenting on the performance of the State, Mr Ahluwalia said that the performance of the State is quite satisfactory and appreciated its efforts to improve horticulture and ginger production.

He said continued focus on physical and social infrastructure development together with urbanisation would catalyse tourism and other income generating activities.

He also appreciated the initiatives taken to make Sikkim first organic and green State in the country. Priorities in the sector need to bed worked out accordingly.

Mr Ahluwalia said the State should embark on a path of sustainable economic development by concentrating on its abundant natural resources. He asked the State to pay attention to the existing educational infrastructure and higher education.

In the health sector, the State was asked to emphasise on the achievement of the health indicators as envisaged in the Plan document. Thrust will also be given to provision of clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities in both rural and urban areas.

The Chief Minister said the thrust of Plan was on the inclusion of the common minimum programme of the UPA and inclusion of various flagship programmes, with particular emphasis on human development.
