Minister of Telecommunications Jyotiraditya Scindia met SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell on Tuesday and discussed opportunities in collaboration in satellite communications following the grant of licence to Starlink to start commercial operations in India.

“Ms Shotwell appreciated the license granted to @Starlink, calling it a great start to the journey,” Scindia posted on X after the meeting.

Productive meeting

Earlier this month, Elon Musk’s Starlink received a licence from the Telecom Ministry to launch commercial operations in India. Scindia said his meeting with Shotwell on Tuesday was productive.

“We delved into opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India’s soaring ambitions and empower every citizen across the country,” Scindia said.

With India’s digital revolution under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, satellite technologies are not just relevant, they’re transformative, the Minister said.

Two other companies—Eutelsat’s OneWeb and Reliance Jio— have also received approval to provide services in the country.
