A Disaster Recovery Centre (DRC) for the State is to be housed in the Information Technology Park at Ilanthaikulam in the outskirts of the city. It will ensure data security and its establishment has been accorded formal approval by the Chief Minister and is expected to become operational in 2012, according to Mr Santosh Babu, Secretary, Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu.

He said that the DRC would be a unique facility, mirroring the image of State Data Centre located in Chennai. The tender for its establishment would be floated soon and the estimated cost is about Rs 60 crore. The facility has become necessary as part of a comprehensive Business Continuity Planning, following the 9/11 terrorist attack, he added.

'Disaster recovery' refers to the process, policies and procedures related to the preparation for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure critical to an organization in the aftermath of a natural or human induced disaster.
