From high-end global fashion stores to movie theatres and even supermarkets, Indian malls are rapidly evolving into convenient yet massive one-stop entertainment hubs.
Next time you’re lost in an unfamiliar shopping mall, Google Maps can lend a little help. Starting today, with the release of Indoor Google Maps in India, you can access detailed floor plans for 75 indoor venues with just a few easy swipes.
Indoor Google Maps are like having an indoor directory in the palm of your hand. Detailed floor plans will automatically appear when you’re using the Google Maps app on iOS and Android, and zoomed in on a building where indoor map data is available. Simply zoom out and the Indoor Google Maps will fade away.
In some locations, you’ll have the option of using the My Location feature to help you navigate your way inside. "We’ve worked with partners to bring the My Location feature — previously available in Google Maps for mobile for outdoor spaces — indoors to several venues. Where available the familiar “blue dot” icon can help indicate your approximate location in order to help you find your way more easily. This means that when you move up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the map will automatically update to display which floor you’re on. At these locations, you can also access indoor walking directions to help you get to where you need to go more quickly.
"To date, we’ve worked with 75 partners across 22 cities in India to bring you Indoor Google Maps for top indoor venues, and we look forward to working with others to continue making Google Maps more useful for people across the country," Google said in a statement. Indian business owners interested in getting their location’s floor plan included in Google Maps can visit maps.google.com/floorplans .
"We hope the new Indoor Google Maps can help you more seamlessly explore these popular and often complex indoor locations, whether it’s your first time visiting a multi-storey mall or simply trying to find the easiest way to a new store," Google said.
Google Indoor Maps will initially be available at select locations in 22 Indian cities including Delhi – NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Coimbatore and Ahmedabad.
The service, available as part of Google Maps, is already available in the US, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.
“With Indoor Google Maps in India, people can access detailed floor plans of 75 popular indoor venues with a few easy swipes,” Google India Director and Product Manager (Maps) Suren Ruhela told PTI.
Some of the major locations include Ambience Mall in Gurgaon and Select City Walk in Delhi.
“To date, we’ve worked with 75 partners across 22 cities in India to bring indoor maps,” he said, adding that the list will be expanded in the coming days.
Apart from malls, indoor maps would be available for the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi, the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad and the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.
