Lenovo India said the company is growing in the Government and education businesses, especially with projects such as that of Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), and will bid for similar projects in near future.

The company has already supplied around three lakh laptops for the ELCOT project over last one year and would soon supply 55,000 more, Rahul Agarwal, Executive Director – Commercial Business, Lenovo India, told Business Line .

“In education, from 10 per cent market share two years ago, we are now 20 per cent plus. The Government’s business keeps fluctuating, but last year we had a 17 per cent market share from 10 per cent a year ago,” he said.

With the Uttar Pradesh Government also announcing distribution of laptops and tablet PC to education institutes, Lenovo said it will bid for the project apart from bidding for ELCOT’s second phase in next few weeks.

“Though they have not floated any tender yet, we are closely in touch and engaged with the UP Government with our successful story in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Lenovo India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Chinese manufacturer that ranked number three two years ago is now No. 1 since last year in PC shipments in India. According to the latest study by independent research firm IDC, Lenovo has maintained its market share of 17 per cent in the second quarter this year in the Indian PC market.

The success is due to the strategic changes made recently across five verticals in India, Agarwal said.

The verticals are global, very large enterprise, large enterprise, Government and education. All have led to the company’s growth, each performing better as compared to last year. Lenovo (China) that has reached a strategic alliance with American storage maker EMC to implement cooperation in server and storage will also boost its business in India, he added.
