Google is celebrating India’s Independence Day - with a doodle, used a wrong colour - yellow, instead of saffron.

The tri-coloured doodle, in the form of a ribbon, when clicked, leads to the search results for ‘Independence Day India’.

But in its eagerness, Google seemed to have messed up - it used yellow instead of saffron, resulting in negative comments on social media.

The doodle received mixed reactions because of the bloomer.

Many tweeple teared into Google for its wrong colour selection. > @NeilSanghavi had no mercies. “The ugliest google doodle ever... its saffron u idiots not yellow,” he said. Singer Chinmayi Sriprada ( >@Chinmayi ) seemed to agree, and retweeted it with the comment: “Plus 1 billion”.

>@neetakolhatkar replied to >@NeilSanghavi saying, “colour blind hoga woh designer person”. Kattan chaaya ‏( >@mnjktweets ) later responded by tweeting, “changes made now to the doodle...its Saffron.”

Apart from the mix-up in the colour, some found it similar to the Coca-Cola logo. >@jainrounak tweeted saying, “Not sure if today's Google doodle is for India or Coca-Cola,” referring to the similarity.

The doodle also found its way to Google Now too, as >@aatifsumar discovered and tweeted to Google Now fans.

Google is known for its doodles that mark special days and events. In India, it regularly comes out with doodles for Independence Day, Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.

Yesterday, it had come out with a doodle for Pakistan’s Independence Day, but this doodle was visible only in Pakistan, as Google doodles that are country-specific are locked to country-specific IPs.

Last year’s doodle for Independence Day featured India’s national bird - peacock - and was hailed as one of the best doodles from Google.

Those not in India got to see the Google doodle celebrating the 155th birthday of Edith Nesbit, the author of The Railway Children.
