Reliance Globalcom, the submarine cable unit of Reliance Communications, has selected Ciena Corp’s solution to upgrade its Flag Europe-Asia submarine network.
The Indian company, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani, will use the solution to upgrade the sub-sea network to 100 GB from present 40 GB, Reliance Globalcom said in a statement.
Nasdaq-listed Ciena, a network specialist, will offer its WaveLogic coherent optical 100 GB networking solutions to Reliance Globalcom.
“Ciena’s proven coherent optical technology gives us the ability to upgrade our existing submarine networks from 10GB to 40GB and 100GB rates, and beyond, so that we can keep pace with our customers’ changing bandwidth requirements while leveraging our investments in fibre assets,” said Punit Garg, President and CEO, Reliance Globalcom.
In 2011, the companies announced two 40 GB deployments on the Reliance Globalcom network – one to support a 5,000 km submarine link along the routes connecting Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong, and the other to support a 6,400 km link connecting the U.K., Spain, Italy and Egypt.
The network upgrade with 100 gigabyte technology allows Reliance Globalcom to increase submarine bandwidth on this segment by 10 times. It will also help Reliance Globalcom to support the surge of high-bandwidth applications such as cloud computing, video conferencing, business continuity and disaster recovery, data centre connectivity among others.
Earlier this year, Reliance announced it is using Ciena’s 100 GB solutions to power its European network.
