Sistema to stay away from auction, Telenor puts in application

Idea Cellular, Airtel, Vodafone and Tata Telservices have also put in their applications.

Russian major Sistema has decided not to participate in the upcoming auction for spectrum. The company has filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court and is hoping that its licences will not be cancelled.

But Norway's Telenor has decided to put in a bid under a new entity- Telewings Communications.

"Telenor Group confirms that it submitted its application for pre-qualification in the 1800 MHz band spectrum auction to the Indian Department of Telecommunications on . The application was filed by Telewings Communication Services Private Limited, a fully owned Telenor Group company," the company said.

Telenor Group has indicated its interest to take part in the auction, and provided all necessary documents and financial guarantees requested to be eligible for participation in its application. A final decision on whether or not to participate will be made before the auction starts, it said. Telenor Group continues its efforts to secure a new Indian partner and to obtain all necessary approvals to transfer Uninor assets into the new company.

Other major players including Idea Cellular, Airtel, Vodafone and Tata Telservices have also put in their applications. Tata Telservices is going after CDMA spectrum in three circles, according to sources.
