‘Surplus’ rumours pound pepper

Rumours of increased availability pulled down spot pepper prices on Tuesday.

More sellers were forthcoming from Coorg region of Karnataka, where harvesting has commenced. Wayanad sellers have also become active, market sources told BusinessLine .

On the terminal market, 21 tonnes of pepper from Wayanad, the plains and the high ranges were traded at ₹575-595-600 a kg, they said.

Spot prices dropped by ₹100 a quintal to ₹58,100 (ungarbled) and ₹61,100 (garbled). April, May and June contracts remained unchanged at ₹60,000, 59,000 and ₹59,000 a quintal respectively.

Export prices were at $9,625 a tonne c&f for Europe and $9,875 a tonne c&f for US.
