Turmeric prices stay stable

Turmeric being packed in gunny bag at a whole sale outlet in Kochi, Sluggish demand and ample stocks with traders due to early harvesting of turmeric because of heavy rains in North India, is likely to weaken turmeric prices in the country for a short term. But lower estimated production of 42-45 lakh bag turmeric compared to 51 lakh bags last year owing to lower acreage of crop is expected to push the demand and price too. Prices of turmeric on the spot markets edged up a tad and that on the futures remained unchanged. On Thursday, 5,400 bags of the yellow spice arrived for sale and 80 per cent of them were sold. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, finger variety went for ₹5,699-8,569 a quintal; root variety for ₹5,323-7,809. Of the 3,286 bags offered, 1,982 were sold.
