Benchmark indices edge down further, Nifty below 14,200

Sensex down over 200 points at 48,220

Benchmark indices edged down further in the afternoon session on Wednesday after ruling marginally lower in morning trade.

At 1:40 pm, the BSE Sensex was down 216 points or 0.45 per cent at 48,220.10  while the NSE Nifty slipped 57 points or 0.48 per cent to 14142.90, mainly dragged by index heavyweight Reliance industries.

The Sensex opened at 48,616.66 and the Nifty at 14,240.95. 

Reliance Industries lost the most. Shares of Reliance Industries were down Rs 51.65 or 2.4 per cent at Rs 1,914.45 on the NSE. Other laggards included ITC, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and HCL Technologies. 

However, GAIL, Powergrid, Bharti Airtel, ONGC and Hindalco were the top gainers on the Nifty 50.

The market breadth remained positive as 1,643 stocks advanced and 1,350 declined on the BSE.
