Bank union wants govt to reimburse demonetisation costs

All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) has said that the Centre should reimburse banks the costs incurred on demonetisation.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Y Sudarshan, president of AIBOC, said that demonetisation has caused serious work pressure on employees in the banking industry.

The entire workforce stood by the government’s initiative to tackle the black-money problem and cooperated in the successful implementation of the demonetisation scheme.

The hardship the workforce underwent should have been looked into by the government and appropriate relief provided to them, he said.

Performance hit

Banks could not give adequate attention to lending activity during the process of demonetisation and this, he said, has affected the performance of banks during the period. “The government should provide compensation to the officers and employees of banks for working late during the demonetisation period. The government should also reimburse the cost of demonetisation to the banks,” he said.

The United Forum of Bank Unions has decided to conduct a one-day strike on February 28 in protest against various issues affecting the banking sector, he said.
