Poonam Gupta appointed new RBI Deputy Governor for three years

Poonam Gupta, new RBI Deputy Governor

The Central government has named Poonam Gupta as the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor for a period of three years, according to a notification. Gupta succeeds Michael Patra, who acted as RBI Deputy Governor between January 2020-January 2025, overseeing key departments including monetary policy, financial markets operations, regulation and economic research.

Gupta currently serves as the Director General of National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), an economic policy think tank. She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; and Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

She joined NCAER in 2021 after working for nearly two decades at the IMF and World Bank in the US. Gupta was also a professor at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland (US), and as a visiting faculty at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi. She has also been the RBI Chair Professor at the NIPFP and a professor at the ICRIER, according to NCAER website.

With the appointment of Gupta, the RBI now has a total of four Deputy Governors including Swaminathan J, T Rabi Sankar, and M Rajeshwar Rao.
