With a long history of trade with the Chinese and the Portuguese, the people of Kochi have retained their traditions while keeping pace  with techology.

The origins of the Chinese fishing nets, also known as  cheenavala,  is unique to the city, although its origins is not known. It is believed that this way of fishing was brought to the region by the famous Chinese explorer Zheng He. Another version says that the Portuguese passed on this technique from Macau in the 16th centuary.

The Vallarpadam Terminal, or the Kochi International Transhipment Terminal, is India's first transshipment terminal to operate in a SEZ. Run by Dubai Ports World (DPW), the terminal is part of the Cochin Port

In this slideshow, view the ancient Chinese fishing nets and Vallarpadam Terminal, which has the latest technology.
