The company recycles end-of-life batteries, retrieves such as Lithium, cobalt and nickel from it and uses it to manufacture cells

Boson Cell, a Chennai-based lithium cell manufacturing company, has launched two new variants of its lithium-ion cells and says it has already lined up customers across the drone and EV sectors for this new product. The high-performance and cost-effective variants -18350 B-30A and 21700 B-50A—are designed to help reduce Chinese imports for various industries, including drones, EVs, and energy storage systems, the company said.

“We have customers and distributors lined up already as many were waiting for our commercial launch and have already tested our samples before the BIS certification process,” Guru Punghavan, CEO of Boson Cell, said. We have around four distributors lined up across TN, Karnataka and other states and 4-5 customers in drones and EV makers, he added.

Boson Cell has a manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai. The company recycles end-of-life batteries, retrieves Lithium, cobalt, and nickel from them, and uses them to manufacture cells. Given the challenges in accessing e-waste, it is also importing some minerals from China at the moment to meet its production targets.

The company claims its products outperform Chinese counterparts, offering up to 1,000 recharge cycles compared to 350 of Chinese cells. “Currently our capacity is less than 0.1 GW of lithium-ion cells per year, but by the end of 2026 April, we hope to get to 3 GW,” he said.

Boson Cell is a group company of East West Combined Industries. While it already raised $1.5 million in seed funding from the parent company, Punghavan says it is also closing another round of fund infusion of $10.5 million in the next 3-4 months.

Lithium-ion batteries are a critical enabler in key industries such as clean mobility, consumer electronics, renewable energy, and a rapidly growing drone market. “Our cells are designed for wide compatibility, powering a diverse range of applications including electric vehicles, drones, solar energy systems, power tools, and more,” Punghavan said.

Boson’s products are currently available across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, distributed through electronics retailers, supermarkets, and local kirana stores. Online accessibility is via partnerships with Amazon, Flipkart, and Boson’s own direct-to-consumer e-commerce platform.
