The Delhi government is drafting rules for scrapping 15-year-old private vehicles in the national capital as directed by the National Green Tribunal, a senior official said on Monday.

The Delhi Scrapping of Vehicles Rules 2018, will be sent to the government, particularly the Law Department, within a couple of days for vetting, the official said. The draft rules will subsequently be put in public domain for comments and suggestions.

“The rules are being framed to ensure that owners of private vehicles older than 15 years are not unduly inconvenienced in disposing them of,” said Varsha Joshi, Delhi Transport Commissioner.

Under the rules, all impounded vehicles will be sent directly to empanelled scrap dealers who have to adhere to strict environmental norms and owners will be paid a scrapping charge, which has not yet been quantified. According to official data, out of more than one crore vehicles registered in Delhi, around one-third are more than 15 years old.
