The Hinduja Foundation has initiated talks with the Berklee College of Music to set up an India Campus to teach students Indian music, with courses including song-writing and film scoring, among others.
The campus will look to teach students Indian popular music, Bollywood and Kollywood music, among others. Even though the talks are in the initial stages, this would mean setting up the first music education campus in India, the foundation said in a statement.
“Indian music is yet to get full recognition in the global arena and, perhaps, it could be the next best soft power export to the world after yoga. I would like to contribute to our music’s spread amongst the younger generation and what better way than promoting its education,” said Ashok Hinduja, Chairman, Hinduja Group India.
The talks follow the recent visit of the Berklee College of Music’s President Roger H. Brown to India. Berklee also recently set up the Berklee India Exchange, a platform for cultural conversations about Indian music through artiste residencies, musical collaborations, and performances.
