To showcase facilities and achievements

Mangalore University is all set to showcase its strengths and facilities with a view to expose prospective postgraduate students to various facets of the campus and curriculum. In this regard, it will conduct an ‘open house’ on June 12 and 13.

Chinnappa Gowda, dean of the university, told Business Line that each department in the university has its own strength. Many a time, graduate students who want to pursue postgraduate courses in the university may not be aware of these strengths.

Guided tour

Stating that Mangalore University has 27 departments with 35 courses, he said the ‘open house’ is aimed at showcasing the facilities in these departments, activities being carried out by the faculty and scholars, and milestones and important contributions of the departments concerned.

It will also highlight funding from national and international agencies and sponsorship from various industries for various courses. In addition to this students will also be informed about the avenues and opportunities available after completing the courses, he said.

In the ‘open house’ session, the prospective students will get an opportunity to visit the departments of their choice, to hold discussions with the faculty members, and to get information on various other areas related to the course and the university, he said.

The advanced science research facilities in the university that are funded by various government agencies, the art and culture museums in the campus, and the sports facilities will be on display during the ‘open house’ session for the students and parents to visit.

These efforts should help the student to decide about the course of his/her choice to pursue higher studies, he said.

Alumni to attend

Some of the old students of the university, who have made big names in various sectors, will be invited to the open house to present their views on their departments for the prospective postgraduate students, Gowda said.

Though some colleges have been offering postgraduate courses, the experience of learning on the university campus is different.

Giving the example of Kannada department in the university, he said the department has 18 endowment chairs. They all put together conduct around 500 special lectures a year. A student from non-Kannada department in the university, who is interested in those lectures, may get benefit of this.

Normally, a person who seeks admission to a postgraduate course in the university may not be aware of these facts, he said.

KR Chandrashekar, coordinator of the event, said that Mangalore University is the first university in Karnataka to host such an ‘open house’ for students.

Mangalore University has jurisdiction over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts in the state. Arrangements will be made at various points in Mangaluru city pick students up for the ‘open house’ session, he said.
