Sustaining and reinvigorating higher education is a challenge, according to the President, Pranab Mukherjee.

He was addressing the graduates at the first convocation of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) here on Wednesday.

Issues such as escalating costs and narrow market driven approaches should be tackled, Mukherjee said.

Citing examples of the Buddha, Nalanda and Taxila universities, the President said Asia and South Asia had opened up noble paths of learning.

“Knowledge must pave the path of life,” he added.

Referring to academic achievements of EFLU, Mukherjee said: “Yours is a young university with rich history.”

Sunaina Singh, Vice-Chancellor, EFLU, said the university had come a long way since its inception as Central Institute of English in 1958.

“The university is now poised to open centres in African countries including Sudan,” she said.
