Sharp increase in enrolment in global B-Schools

The spurt of closure of technical institutions and B-Schools in India has resulted in increased enrolment into global B-Schools especially in the UK and the US, say experts.

Citing AICTE’s latest report, Rondy de Silva, Senior Lecturer, International Business, Sheffield Hallam University, UK, said that between 2007 and 2012, India witnessed an upsurge of 927 B-Schools. But over 755 technical education courses were shut down in 2015 and 147 standalone B-Schools and MBA programmes offered by engineering institutions across the country followed suit the last academic year.

“In the wake of such closures, enrolments into global B-Schools is witnessing a sharp increase. As India moves towards skills-based economy, companies will need experienced leaders with a global focus. Degrees in business studies are still in demand worldwide. With many universities offering business degrees, choosing a school of study can be very daunting and there are many areas that students should closely consider when making a decision.

“The university’s link with the industry is also an important aspect, and can be the pathway from education to employment. Accreditation of courses can play a key role as it validates the quality of courses being offered,” explains de Silva.

Asked about the courses that are in demand in global B schools, she said, “in terms of India, the most sought after business course is still MBA. However, increasingly I am observing the trend for courses that are specific to entrepreneurship. It appears that the demand is based on innovators wanting to return to India and bring in skills that will enable them to succeed in their home turf.”

She added that, “in the wake of “Make in India” campaign, India requires trained leaders who understand the domestic and global markets. With the closing down of mushrooming management courses in India, the quality of education will improve and only the equipped ones will be able to take the task forward with ownership and efficiency.”
