University of Hyderabad to turn 'Golden Threshold' into a cultural hub

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) was born in 1974 in a majestic building designated ‘The Golden Threshold’ (GT) in Abids, in the heart of Hyderabad, which was bequeathed to the university by Sarojini Naidu's family.

Over the past four decades, UoH has grown into one of the top five universities in the country. Today, it is located in a sprawling campus in Gachibowli.

But GT has housed its arts and fine arts faculties. In fact, the Fine Arts and Communication School was named the Sarojini Naidu School, the university's only school to be named after an individualit, say university officials.

In a recent decision, the UoH has decided to renovate GT and turn it into a cultural hub. The intention is to promote art and culture. In this direction, the university would work with the Telangana government to promote cultural activities on a regular basis.

The university plans to create a space for art exhibitions, a small museum of performing arts. It would also facilitate performances. This was announced at the NatarajaRamakrishna (NRK) Memorial Lecture held recently at UoH. An eminent danseuse and cultural historian, Padma Subramanyam, delivered this year’s lecture. NatarajaRamakrishna was a noted exponent of the Perini dance form.

The university is keen to create a cultural hub in the heart of the city that would provide alternate platforms for artists in the newly-formed Telangana state.
