Flight operations at the Chennai airport will be suspended till 6 am on Thursday, according to airport director Deepak Shastri.
Operations cannot be resumed due to water logging. "We will review the situation tomorrow morning,'' he told BusinessLine.
"There is nearly 5 ft of water in certain places. The runway is still submerged,'' said airport sources.
Nearly 1,000 passengers were affected since last evening as they were unable to take off due to the stoppage of flight operations, the sources said.
