Revenue shorfall on the lower side

West Bengal’s revenue collections are expected to be good under the GST regime and revenue shortfall on switching over to the new tax regime is likely to be on the lower side, said Subir Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner, Directorate of Commercial Taxes (West Bengal).

According to him, nearly ₹28,000 crore has so far been given as compensation to different States whose revenues were affected by the GST rollout.

Compensation

Karnataka received the highest compensation to the tune of ₹3,400 crore and is among the top losers, while West Bengal figures lower on the list.

“From this we can presume that GST collections have been good for the State,” he said without giving numbers.

Ghosh was speaking at a ‘GST refresher outreach programme’ organised by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
