Kochi port registers 5.25% growth in cargo handling

Kochi port has registered a 5.25 per cent increase in cargo handling at 208.9 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 fiscal against the throughput of 198.4 lakh tonnes in 2012-13.

This is the highest cargo throughput at the port in one year and the major growth in cargo handling was witnessed mainly in Willingdon Island, a press statement said.

Break bulk cargo, including timber, grew 40.8 per cent. Bulk cargo, including cement, showed a marked increase of 17.2 per cent. Oil cargo, the major component of the port, also rose 3.1 per cent and container handling grew 3.4 per cent.

The port also registered a marked growth of 9.3 per cent in stuffing/de-stuffing of containers in its container freight station. It also hosted 34 cruise ships last year.
