The advisory comes after the detection of cases of HMPV in Karnataka

The Maharashtra Health Department has confirmed that no case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in the state so far. However, the department has issued an advisory urging district administrations to remain vigilant and enhance surveillance of patients exhibiting cold and cough symptoms.

The advisory comes after the detection of cases of HMPV in Karnataka, reported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The state health department has analysed respiratory infection data and found no significant increase in cases in December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Despite this, the department has emphasised the importance of precautionary measures to prevent respiratory infections.

The advisory outlines measures for citizens to follow to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. It stresses the need to cover the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, maintain hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap or using sanitizers, and avoid public places if experiencing fever, cough, or sneezing. Citizens are also advised to ensure adequate ventilation in living spaces, stay hydrated, and consume a nutritious diet to boost immunity.

The health department has also urged citizens to avoid handshakes, close contact with sick individuals, and the reuse of tissues or handkerchiefs. People are cautioned against touching their face frequently, spitting in public places, and taking medications without a doctor’s advice.

With the emergence of HMPV cases in Karnataka, the Maharashtra Health Department has stressed the need to remain alert and follow the issued guidelines to curb the potential spread of respiratory infections in the state.
