India has called for a consortium of nations that have significant solar energy potential to come together to conduct joint research in an effort to reduce the cost of electricity from such sources.
Chairing a meet of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a careful evaluation of all the initiatives taken by India in the field of clean energy generation, energy conservation and energy efficiency, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Minister of Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar said: “The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change met for the first time and discussed a wide range of subjects such as INDCs, National and State Action Plans.”
“The PM said we should look at the problem of climate change as an opportunity and project India’s achievements effectively,” he added. Sources in the know of the development added that the discussions took place on integrating the country’s solar mission with wind energy. Plans to convert waste to energy are also being formulated.
“The Prime Minister told the Council that India needs to develop responsibly and make sure we think of the impact on climate change.
He also emphasised much stronger targets for energy efficiency,” a Government official said, adding that no decisions on any deals with the US were taken at the meeting.
