European hotel major, Accor Group, on Monday, today inaugurated its upscale hotel Novotel here. This, incidentally, will be the group’s first hotel here.

The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, inaugurated the hotel. Coming up in the satellite township of Rajarhat, the hotel will have 347 rooms.

Two of its other brands, iBis and Formule1, are also exploring opportunities here, sources said.

Way back in 1990s, the Accor Group is said to have bid for the then state-run Great Eastern Hotel (now re-branded The Lalit Great Eastern) in Kolkata. Jyoti Basu was then the Chief Minister. However, the disinvestment bid failed to take place following resistance from the trade unions.
