The West Bengal Government on Tuesday decided to set up 88 fast track courts to hear incidents of crimes against women.
The move comes days after the death of a Delhi rape victim and another alleged incident of rape and murder in Barasaat — on the northern fringes of the city.
A decision to set up fast track courts was taken at the Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Parliamentary affairs minister, Partha Chatterjee, said the Government has decided to set up the courts to ensure that “cases of crime against women are fast tracked” and they are able to render “expeditious justice”.
According to Chatterjee, posts of 94 judges would be created for the purpose and other requisite staff appointment will be made.
The posts of judges would be permanent in nature. abhishek.l@thehindu.co.in
