The CPI(M) has passed a resolution at its ongoing congress opposing violations of net neutrality and enclosure of the internet.
Briefing the media here on Friday, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said the party criticised the so-called consultation document published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as it was supporting the interests of telecom companies and internet monopolies.
"Net neutrality means that all web-based services or web sites have to be treated equally by the network operator (telecom companies). The argument of the telecom companies that they need more money to build infrastructure and hence the need to violate neutrality is not tenable according to our party. The revenues from data services are more than sufficient for the purpose," he said.
He said the Competition Commission of India had begun investigations into the activities of telecom companies for violating net neutrality, but the TRAI document "blatantly supports the companies."
He said the party was also in favour of a code of conduct for men in public places in view of the growing crimes against women in the country. He said the party also passed a resolution opposing the attempts of the Modi Government to dilute the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The party felt that in spite of all flaws the MNREGA had a positive impact on rural employment and wages.
