Cyclone Ockhi lends much-needed calm to campaign scenario

Cyclonic Ockhi, whose landfall is expected Tuesday midnight along the Gujarat coast, has brought some much-needed calm to the election campaigns in the State.

The coastal areas of Saurashtra and South Gujarat, which go to polls in the first phase on December 9, are among the most impacted by the cyclonic storm.

Reports said rains, winds and a fall in temperature across many districts have slowed down political activities.

BJP president Amit Shah, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Congress leader Raj Babbar were among those whose election rallies slated for Tuesday were cancelled. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, however, addressed one on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a dozen rallies over three days from Thursday, weather permitting.
