Fire at Godrej Industries’ Valia unit in Gujarat

One is reportedly dead, while four injured in the accident

An industrial accident followed by a fire at Godrej Industries Limited's factory in Valia near Bharuch in south Gujarat is reported to have claimed one life and injured four on Monday. However, the fire was brought under control immediately and the injured have been rushed to the nearby hospital.

In a statement to the stock exchanges, Godrej Industries informed about “a fire in a section of the Company's plant at Valia, Gujarat. The fire was brought under control immediately. The cause of the fire and necessary repairs required is being assessed. The Company has adequate fire insurance cover and the above incident is not expected to have any material impact on the financial performance of the Company.”

The plant was being used for manufacturing of Fatty Acids, Glycerin, Fatty Alcohols & Surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate & Alpha Olefin Sulphonate from vegetable oils. “Due to lack of demand, the plant wasn't fuctional at its full capacity,” a source informed.

The plant has installed capacity for Fatty Alcohols at 65000 tonnes per annum, while it also has a dedicated Export Oriented Unit of 30000 TPA. The products made at this facility were apparently exported to more than 60 countries across the globe, the company website mentioned.

Godrej Industries shares ended down 2.28 per cent at Rs 330.15 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
