GIFT, Qianhai partner to develop smart cities

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) and Qianhai Shenzhen, the Silicon Valley of China, have inked an intent of co-operation to develop smart cities in a reciprocal manner, an official communique here said.

The Qianhai Shenzhen - Hong Kong Modern Services Industry Cooperation Zone and GIFT City signed the agreement on Wednesday.

During her visit to China, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel had held high-level discussions with the Chairman of Qianhai Shenzhen – Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, Zhang.

Situated on the coast of the South China Sea and adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau, Qianhai Shenzhen – Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone has emerged as an innovation area for the modern service industry, acting as a pilot area for close cooperation between mainland China and Hong Kong.

Shenzhen is a major city in the south of Southern China’s Guangdong province. Dubbed as China’s Silicon Valley, Shenzhen is one of the most vibrant economic zones in China and has one of the busiest container ports in the world.

GIFT City project is being designed as a smart city and is an initiative of the Gujarat government to provide world-class infrastructure and facilities to finance and technology firms. Located between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, GIFT City falls under the influence zone of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).

The GIFT City project will have special economic zone (SEZ), an international education zone, integrated townships, convention centres, technology parks, software technology parks, and stock exchanges to provide an integrated township with world-class amenities. Once complete, it will provide direct employment to 5,00,000, and indirect employment to an equal number.

The Chief Minister also visited Foxconn Technology Group’s manufacturing facility to get a first-hand experience of the manufacturing practices followed at Foxconn’s Longhua Science & Technology Park.
