A holistic approach is required for proper healthcare management, said ESL Narasimhan, Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Participating in a Glaucoma Awareness Walk organised by the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) here on Sunday, he said: “I believe in a holistic approach towards healthcare.”

A specialist should check for everything — such as glaucoma — in a just-born and not limit herself to a few mandatory checks, he added.

He alsosuggested that all members of a family with history of glaucoma should undergo regular eye check ups.

As part of Glaucoma Awareness Week (March 12-18), LVPEI has organised a series of activities to create awareness on the eye disorder.

Glaucoma is a disorder associated with an increase in eye pressure, and is characterised by damage to the optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness.

It is estimated that every eighth Indian either has glaucoma or is at risk of developing it.
