The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation plans to popularise the Energy Conservation Building Code, beginning with 25 model buildings, both government and commercial, being made reference models for others.
The code will apply to buildings constructed on 1,000 sq mt of land, with built-up area of over 2,000 sq mt, according to Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan.
“Efforts are on to streamline the functioning of various government departments and construction activity in Telangana and the energy conservation code will be helpful,” he said.
As per the code, multiplexes, hospitals, hotels, and convention centres have to comply with ECBC. The code offers star rating system.
Growing demand With buildings accounting for about 30 per cent of the country’s electricity consumption and the built-up area growing at a rapid rate, the Energy Conservation an Building Code launched by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Union Ministry of Power is aimed at addressing the important aspect of energy conservation.
The demand for office space in the Greater Hyderabad municipal area has increased nearly 10 times in the last eight years, from 1.95 million sq ft in 2005 to 20 million sq ft in 2013.
