In an emotional statement following her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa expressed joy and said the case was a conspiracy by her political rivals.
“The Karnataka High Court’s Judgement makes my heart content. It clears me of blame. It wipes away the aspersions cast on me by my political opponents,” said Jayalalithaa.
“It confirms that I have not done any wrong. This verdict has enabled me to come out shining as burnished gold. This is God’s boon for the people’s faith in me and their prayers after the lower court’s verdict.”
Referring to the special court in Bangalore convicting her in the assets case and the High Court acquitting her today, she said: “Justice has prevailed.”
The case itself was a conspiracy by the opposition DMK, which knows that it cannot defeat the AIADMK in a direct confrontation, the leader said.
The Opposition should at least now give up its vindictive nature, she added.
“As conspiracy and fate played out justice slept in between (in an apparent reference to her conviction) and today’s judgement has proclaimed that justice will emerge victorious,” she said.
Jayalalithaa also thanked her party supporters for reposing faith in her innocence.
She expressed regret over 233 AIADMK supporters committing suicide following her conviction by the lower court last year.
“I recall with sorrow the demise of 233 party cadres, who lost their lives after a special court delivered its verdict on my sentence,” said Jayalalithaa in the statement.
Victory for justice “It’s a victory for justice and defeat for those who had conspired to defame and malign my legacy and the legacy of my mentor. I don’t take it as a victory for me, but a victory for truth and victory for the people of Tamil Nadu.
“I thank the people of Tamil Nadu for reposing faith in me and I thank God for the gift of people’s love,” she added.
“I will always work for the welfare of Tamil Nadu and its people,” she said.
