India’s 70th Republic Day parade themed on Mahatma Gandhi

Tableaux of many states, themed on him, are lined up for the occasion

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended Republic Day celebrations in the national capital as the Chief Guest on Saturday. This year’s Republic Day celebrations were themed on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The first tableau of the parade was from Sikkim. It was followed by the tableau from Maharashtra themed on the Quit India movement. The tableau from Andaman and Nicobar islands highlighted the effect Mahatma Gandhi had on inmates of Cellular Jail.

Jharkhand opted to theme their tableau on communal harmony while Arunachal Pradesh focused on peace within and cleanliness is next to godliness.

Punjab’s tableau was an enactment of the Jallianwala bagh tragedy and Gujarat’s tableau was of the Dandi march. Tamil Nadu’s tableau was themed on the changing attire of Gandhi after he went to Madurai.

The tableau from the Ministry of Power was themed on household electrification and power for all achievements of the centre. The Ministry of Water Resources themed it’s tableau on the Swachh Bharat mission. The Railway Ministry had themed it’s tableau on the role of the Railways in the life of Mahatma Gandhi
