The Karnataka Cabinet on Monday approved the release ₹4,500 crore for land acquisition and to pay compensation to farmers to complete the long-pending Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) in Bengaluru.

The PRR, which connects half the city’s western-eastern-southern suburbs, is a 65-km road project with a width of 100 metres. When completed, it will connect Tumkuru Road and Hosur Road through Ballari Road and Old Madras Road.

Land acquisition

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meet chaired by Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Law and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said, “The Cabinet had already approved project. Today, the Cabinet approved releasing money for land acquisition (1,810 acres).”

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is the implementing authority for PRR. The BDA is planning various initiatives to cut cost on land acquisition. It is planning elevated corridor or surface road. A decision on this is expected shortly.

For the project, BDA has already floated tenders for technical advice and once the agency is finalised, the project will be taken up for execution.

Lift irrigation

The Cabinet also approved ₹100 crore lift irrigation project to fill 30 tanks in Hoskote taluk through evacuation of treated sewage water from KR Puram STP plant.

For setting up Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Raichur, the State government had already given its approval. “Today the Cabinet has decided to allot 65 acres of land to setting this premier IT institute,” said Gowda.

The Cabinet approved to increase bed strength at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (a Government-run autonomous institute) to 1,150 with a budget of ₹45 crore. Government cleared the proposal to release ₹22.5 crore and the remaining balance, the hospital is expected to fund through its internal accruals.
