Karnataka sees 1.17 lakh approvals under PM Surya Ghar, says BESCOM MD

Efforts to drive solar energy adoption in Karnataka are progressing, with 1.17 lakh households approved under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, out of 5.15 lakh registrations, said, Mahantesh Bilagi, Managing Director of BESCOM.

Speaking at the workshop organised by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) to encourage greater adoption of the scheme, Bilagi noted that to implement this initiative, 353 private vendors have registered with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

He added, “We aim to promote the use of solar energy in households across the state, reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, and contribute to national renewable energy targets.”

Launched in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to supply free electricity of up to 300 units per month to 10 million households across India. The scheme provides a subsidy ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹78,000 for grid-connected rooftop solar installations

With a total outlay of ₹750 billion until 2025-26, the program received over 10 million registrations within its first month.

According to an official release, 6.3 lakh installations have been completed nationwide since its launch, with an average monthly installation rate of 70,000.
