Mamata incident: Trinamool MP flays media

The Trinamool Congress on Friday blamed the media for unnecessarily blowing up an incident where the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was caught on camera for publicly abusing her security guard.

According to party MP Saugata Roy, “motivated sections” of the media were making “a mountain out of a molehill.”

Roy is also a member of the Chief Minister’s Advisory Council on IT.

“Some motivated sections of the media have made a mountain out of a molehill. This issue should not be the topic of discussion...Whatever happened is a small thing,” Roy said on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

Roy added that even former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu had abused the Opposition MLAs but there was no hue and cry about the comments then.

“Lakhs of such things are said by a CM,” he added.

Earlier this week, Banerjee had lost her temper and screamed at the security guards following a delay in the arrival of her car at the gate of the Kolkata Book Fair. Banerjee had said that the guards “should be whipped”.

Banerjee’s comments have already drawn criticisms from across different section including fellow politicians.

Rights body APDR (Association of Protection of Democratic Rights) has also filed a complaint with the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, describing the remarks as a gross violation of human rights.

According to Roy, belittling the Chief Minister meant belittling the State.
